What you need to know about:  IDENTITY THEFT PREVENTION AND RECOVERY

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

We hope you have found the information outlined in this ebook valuable.  Although we have tried to provide a relatively expansive analysis of the matter, the nature of identity theft and of its attendant consequences are so broad that some readers may benefit from additional information.

To that end, we are providing this list of high-quality sources of identity theft information.

IDENTITY THEFT RESOURCE CENTER
http://www.idtheftcenter.org/about.shtml

Linda Foley’s employer used her personal information to open a series of credit card accounts and to secure a cellular telephone in 1997.  Linda’s personal struggle took on a broader meaning when it led her to creation of the Identity Theft Resource Center in 1999.

The site now provides a wealth of valuable information regarding identity theft prevention and recovery.  ITRC “is one of the major players in the war” against identity theft and has received numerous awards and a great deal of recognition from both private sources and government agencies.

CALIFORNIA’S OFFICE OF PRIVACY PROTECTION
http://www.privacy.ca.gov/cover/identitytheft.htm

California takes identity theft seriously.  So seriously, in fact, that they have an entire state agency dedicated to the protection of privacy and personal information.  The OPP includes information designed “to help consumers take steps to reduce their risk of becoming victims of identity theft and to help victims take the actions necessary to resolve problems and recover their good names.

Although some of the information is specific to California state statute, the OPP’s web site provides a great deal of additional valuable information for anyone interested in the subject.

PRIVACY RIGHTS CLEARNINGHOUSE
http://www.privacyrights.org/index.htm

The Privacy Rights Clearinghouse is a non-profit dedicated to all matters relating to personal privacy.  Thus, it is not surprising that they have dedicated a great deal of attention to the issue of identity theft.

The PRC often works hand-in-hand with the Identity Theft Resource Center.  At its site you can find a variety of interesting and helpful fact sheets about identity theft issues.

THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION
http://www.ftc.gov/

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is the U.S. federal agency primarily charged with handling matters relating to identity theft.

From its main page one can find a host of documents about the subject as well as links to other government sites dealing with specific types of identity theft.
