Got a Family Website? Reasons Why You Should Keep It Generic

With the invention of the Internet, many families are finding that a family website is the perfect way to share with friends and family the latest news! You can post pictures, update your family blog, and keep everyone apprised of the latest happenings around your house. However there are several reasons that you should consider keeping it generic if you are looking to create a family website.

Internet predators are everywhere and a family website it the perfect opportunity for a predator to get a good look at your family and find out where you live and other things about you or your children. Consider not giving specific details about yourself or your children, such as their
names or where they go to school, on your web site. Also Never ever put an address or phone number on your site as it gives predators an open invitation to come and find you. Instead, keep it generic with some simple pictures and fun and harmless information without a lot of detail. This will protect you and your children from those who wish to do you harm. Unfortunately, in a world where there are dangerous people looking to harm your family or sexual predators waiting to prey on your children, it is important to take every step to make sure you and your children are safe.

Another reason you should keep your family website generic is to protect your online privacy. Often there is information about your likes or dislikes, as well as an email address which invites internet scammers and hackers to try to figure out your personal information and possibly hack into your accounts. Online hackers are very good at their jobs and even information that you may not find to be a clue, can help a hacker guess where and how to find some of the most sensitive information about you.

For example, if you have a picture of your daughter at her fourth birthday party and label it with the date, this may give hackers not only personal information that they can use to find out her name, and possibly other information about her, but also a date to try when looking to break your passwords. You may not even realize that the things you are putting on your family web site are huge clues about how a hacker can break into your private information and steal from you. They can also steal you or your childrens identity by using clues such as last names, for example The Smith Family Website gives a hacker a place to start with your last name as their first clue. This clue combined with others on your site can give an Internet predator or hacker everything they need to find out everything about you. By keeping it generic you can avoid accidentally divulging information that could clue a hacker in to your passwords, accounts, and even keep you off spam lists.

Absolutely never publish or give out sensitive information such as your phone number, addres, or social security number. If someone who visits your site asks for this information claiming to be a friend, do not risk sending it! There are many people out there who know how to trick you and your children into divulging private information that they will then use to hurt your credit, harass you, or even put you in danger. While a family website can offer a fun and easy way to keep reletives updated with those precious pictures, and old friends a way to contact you, they are still places where extreme caution needs to be exercised, especially if your children are featured on your site.
